Has this happened to you? You just created a new world in Minecraft and can't wait to start building, mining, and exploring the surroundings. Suddenly you realize that you have no equipment and no way to "get" equipment - so what do you do? It's simple: make a desktop that opens up the ability to produce a huge number of items, including basic tools. Luckily, you can do it with your bare hands!

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Getting the Planks

Step 1. Find the tree

To make a desktop, you first need to find some wood somewhere nearby. The easiest way is to find a tree. Unless you're in an area where there are no trees at all (such as the desert or the ocean coast), you don't have to go far for wood.

There are several other sources of wood that are found in "wildlife", but they are much less common than trees. For example, wood blocks are used to build houses in villages on the plain or savannah, and also for witch huts

Step 2. Break and collect wood blocks

Once you've found the source of the wood, it's easy to get it. Just break the wooden blocks with your bare hands. To do this, go closer to the source of the wood, turn around to face it and hold down the "attack / destroy" button. Cracks will go through the block and eventually it will break. If you have an ax, things will go faster, but you can break a wooden block without it. Collect wood.

  • Default controls for "attack / destruction" in different versions of Minecraft:
  • PC.

    Left click

  • Pocket Edition.

Clamp the block you want to destroy

  • XBox 360.

    Right trigger

Step 3. Make boards out of blocks

Open your inventory. You should see a single block of wood in one of the slots. From each block of wood, four wooden planks can be made, which is exactly how much you need to create a desktop.

  • Use these instructions to make wooden planks in each version of the game:
  • PC.

Press E to open inventory. Drag the wood block to the workspace on the top right. Drag the wooden planks back to inventory.

  • Pocket Edition.

Open your inventory and select the wood block. Click on the wooden planks on the right to add them to your inventory.

  • XBox 360.

Open the production menu with X. Select wood planks from the Buildings menu and confirm with A.

Step 1. Use wooden planks to make the table

You should now have four wooden planks, which is exactly what you need to make your desktop. It doesn't matter what kind of wood your boards are from (for example, oak, birch, etc.) - any one is suitable.

  • To make a table, follow these steps:
  • PC.

Press E to open inventory. Left-click on the slot with four wooden planks, then right-click on each of the four slots on the top left. Drag the desktop to inventory.

  • Pocket Edition.

Open inventory and select wooden planks. Click on the desktop, then on the desktop button on the right to confirm.

  • XBox 360.

Open the production menu with X. Scroll right to the Buildings menu and select the desktop. Confirm selection with A.

Step 2. Place the table

Congratulations - you've just created your desktop. However, you cannot use it to craft tools and items until you place it somewhere in the "world". To do this, first make sure the table is in the equipment slot. Then switch to the desktop, find a free space on the ground for it, then press the "place block" button to place the table.

  • Default controls for the "place" action in different versions of Minecraft:
  • PC.

    Right click.

  • Pocket Edition.

Tap on the area where you want to place the block that is in the equipment.

  • XBox 360.

    Left trigger.

Step 3. Open the production menu to start making tools

When you put the desktop on the ground, you can use it right away. Once you open the desktop menu, you can craft a variety of items and tools, these must be crafted before you start making your way deep into the worlds of Minecraft. The table also expands the crafting grid up to 3x3 on the PC and Xbox versions (the 2x2 grid is available to you first). However, you won't be able to craft anything until you get the base materials (see next step).

  • Default controls for using the desktop in different versions of Minecraft:
  • PC.

Right click when looking at the table.

  • Pocket Edition.

    Tap on the desktop.

  • XBox 360.

Look at the table and the left trigger.

Step 4. Use your workbench to craft basic tools

Now that you have a desktop, you can use its expanded area to produce many of the basic items you need to start exploring and conquering the world. The production “recipes” below will allow you to get a basic set of wooden tools that can be used to mine stone, fight creeps, and more. For a full list of "recipes" read the official Minecraft Wiki for a page and recipe for any item that can be crafted in the game.

  • Sticks.

Two wooden planks (placed vertically in two slots).

  • Wooden pickaxe.

Three wooden planks in the top row, one stick in the center slot two rows below. Great for wading through rocks.

  • Wooden sword.

One stick in the center slot of the bottom row, two wooden planks in the slots next to it above. Suitable for fighting creeps.

  • Wooden shovel.

One wooden board in the top middle slot, two sticks in the slots below it. Reaches for digging in mud.

  • Wooden ax.

A stick in the center slots of the bottom two rows, a wooden board in the center slot of the top row, the top left slot, and the left slot of the second row. Suitable to wade through the years.

Advice

  • Note that the Playstation 3 game is more or less identical to the XBox 360 version in terms of menus and options.
  • Work tables are also found "off the shelf" in libraries and witch huts.
  • In Minecraft Pocket Edition, you also need a stonecutter to craft basic things out of stone. It is made in the same way as a work table, only from four cobblestones instead of four wooden planks.
