Want to please your inner Indiana Jones in Minecraft? Try to look for temples in the desert, rare structures that randomly appear in the desert areas of the game. You can not only admire them - you can find rare loot and treasures in the temples. Finding a desert temple will take a bit of luck, as there are no reliable methods to predict exactly where they will appear, but when you find a temple, you will know for sure!

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Finding a Temple

Step 1. Create a new world or go to an existing one

Start Minecraft as usual. In theory, you can find a temple on any map with a large stretch of desert - it doesn't matter if you play alone or online with other players.

  • However, in a multiplayer game, there is always the risk that the castle you found was looted or destroyed by another before you got to it, so if you want to be guaranteed to find an "untouched" temple, play in your own world.
  • If you do not want to face the problem of finding a desert temple on your own, it is not a problem to find online seeds of worlds that make the task much easier. For example, these seeds will create a world with a desert temple near the spawn location (should work in version 1.8):
  • Seed: 8678942899319966093

Step 2. Find a large desert

Desert Temples spawn randomly in Desert Areas. There will not be a single temple in the desert - there may be more than one or none at all. Therefore, the best option is to start your search in the largest desert you can find - the larger the area of the desert, the higher the chances that there is at least one temple in it.

There is no single "right" way to find the desert, unfortunately. Deserts are created from the seeds of worlds, so if you are new to the world you are in, you may have to wander around for a while (especially in the unfortunate event that there is no desert in the world). However, there is a way to "count" outside the game - see below

Step 3. Look for a pyramid-shaped desert temple

When you hit the desert, you should look out in the distance for a large structure of pyramid-shaped blocks of sandstone. In front of the temple there will be two large square towers marked with orange clay marks. Since there are few obstructions like mountains in the desert, you should see the towers and the temple from a long distance.

  • Desert temples always appear at a height of y = 64,000. In some cases, this can result in the temple being partially underground. If you see something that looks like a small pyramid without other parts of the temple, you may be looking at the very top of the enclosed temple!

Step 4. If you have a map, look for a square gray mark

Finding the temple can be a little easier with the map (as well as finding the way back after finding the temple). Desert temples appear as gray markers on maps (just like a regular stone), but have a characteristic square shape, which is not usually the case with natural stones.

Step 5. If you are tired of searching, use the app to find desert temples

Have you tried to find a deserted temple the old fashioned way and returned dejected empty-handed? There is still hope! Use the online Desert Temple Finder app from chunkbase.com to get the coordinates of all the desert temples on the current map. Just place the seed of your world (or choose "random" to get a random one), press "Find Desert Temples" and scroll through the map to see where the temples are located on your map.

  • Notice.

    By default, pressing F3 (or Function + F3 on Mac) in-game brings up a menu with your x / y / z coordinates.

Method 2 of 2: Looting a Temple

Step 1. Enter the central portal of the temple

The desert temple can be entered through a small doorway in the front (between two square towers). Inside, you should find a darkened chamber with diamond-shaped decorations made of orange clay and a single block of blue clay in the center. These marks show where the treasures of the temple are hidden.

Once you find a covered temple, you don't have to dig to get to the door and enter. You can go down through the hole at the top of the pyramid and reach the camera - however, be careful not to get hurt if you fall

Step 2. Dig carefully under the emblem to avoid the trap

Below the central diamond on the floor is a 3x3 room containing four chests. They can contain random items like gold bars, horse armor, and even rarities like diamonds or enchanted books. However, in the center of the small room is a stone slab connected to nine sticks of dynamite.

Touch her and you will most likely lose your life (and the treasure in the room). The slab is located directly under the blue clay block. So it is worth making your way into the room carefully, from a point located to the side of the stove.

One good way to do this is to unearth the steps from the secret chamber that start a few blocks to the side. Then you will enter the chamber from the side rather than from above, and are less likely to fall on the slab or get hurt if you fall

Step 3. Deactivate the stove

When you hit the small treasure, take the time to deactivate the trap and prevent any accidents. Use the pickaxe to carefully loot the stone pressure plate in the center of the room without touching it. When the stove is removed, the room should be safe unless you manually light the dynamite.

Step 4. Rob

The four chests in the chamber are filled with items - some common, some rare. Each chest contains 2-6 stacks of items; each may contain one or more item units. In desert temples, you can also find such items - note that they are rare and may not appear in all desert temples:

  • Iron ingots
  • Gold bars
  • Diamonds
  • Emeralds
  • Saddles
  • Iron / Gold / Diamond Horse Armor
  • Enchanted books

Cautions

  • Since there is no light in the desert temple, mobs may appear, so bring your weapons and armor.
  • On rare occasions, mobs can spawn in the treasury and step on the slab, destroying the treasure before you get to the slab. There is no way to prevent this situation.
