In this article, we will show you how to edit Minecraft textures and use them in the game on computers running Windows and macOS.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: On Windows

Step 1. Install the WinRAR archiver on your computer
You will need it to open the JAR file.
When installing WinRAR, make sure there is a checkbox next to JAR on the page listing supported file types. Also allow (if prompted) WinRAR to add shortcuts to the context menu

Step 2. Open the Minecraft launcher
To do this, double click on the Minecraft icon.

Step 3. Click on Launch options
It's in the upper-right side of the launcher window.

Step 4. Click Last release
You will find this option at the top of the launcher window.

Step 5. Open the folder with the Minecraft game
To do this, click on the green arrow on the right side of the "Game directory" field. The.minecraft folder will open, which contains all the Minecraft files.

Step 6. Double click on the "versions" folder
You will find it in the middle of the.minecraft folder.

Step 7. Double click on the folder with the most recent version of the game
As of February 2019, the most recent version of Minecraft is version 1.13.2, that is, double-click on the "1.13.2" folder.
When in doubt, look for the folder with the highest number in the name

Step 8. Copy the JAR file
Click on the JAR file that looks like Java, and then press Ctrl + C.

Step 9. Click on the ".minecraft" folder
You will find it on the left side of the window. You will be returned to the main game folder.

Step 10. Create a new folder for the texture pack
For this:
- Click on the "Home" tab.
- Click New Folder.
- Enter the folder name.
- Press ↵ Enter.

Step 11. Open the created folder
To do this, double-click on it.

Step 12. Paste the copied JAR file into the folder
To do this, press Ctrl + V.

Step 13. Unpack the JAR file using WinRAR
Right-click the JAR file, and then select Extract to [JAR File Name] from the menu.
- For example, if the JAR file is named "1.13.1", click "Extract to 1.13.1".
- If your mouse or trackpad does not have left and right buttons, click on the right side of the button, or tap (or press a button on the trackpad) with two fingers.

Step 14. Open the JAR folder
Double click on the "1.13.1" folder (or the folder with the latest version of Minecraft).

Step 15. Double click on the "assets" folder
It's at the top of the JAR folder.
In fact, you only need the "assets" folder, so the other contents of the JAR folder can be deleted

Step 16. Double click on the "minecraft" folder
You will find it in the middle of the assets folder.

Step 17. Double click on the "textures" folder
It's in the middle of the Minecraft folder.

Step 18. Find the category of the texture you want to edit and open its folder
For example, to edit the texture of a block, double-click on the "blocks" folder.

Step 19. Open the texture in Paint
Find the texture you want to edit, right-click on it and choose Open With> Paint from the menu.

Step 20. Edit the texture
In Paint change the colors of the texture. Your actions will depend on how you want to change the texture.

Step 21 Save your changes and close Paint
Press Ctrl + S or click the floppy disk icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then close Paint.

Step 22. Change other textures
When done, add the texture pack to Minecraft.

Step 23. Return to the JAR folder
To do this, click on the name of the JAR folder (for example, "1.13.1") on the left side of the window.

Step 24. Create and open a new text file
For this:
- Click Home.
- Click on "New Item".
- Click "Text Document".
- Press ↵ Enter and then double-click on the generated file.

Step 25. Enter the resource pack code
In the generated text document, enter the following code - each line of code should be on a separate line:

Step 26. Save the text file with the extension ".mcmeta"
For this:
- Click "File".
- Click "Save As".
- Enter pack.mcmeta in the File Name text box.
- Open the File Type menu.
- Click All Files.
- Click "Save".

Step 27. Create resource pack
Open the JAR folder, locate the.mcmeta file, right-click on it, and choose Submit> Compressed Zip Folder from the menu.

Step 28. Copy the zip file of the texture pack
Click on it and then press Ctrl + C.

Step 29. Add the texture pack to Minecraft
Click on the ".minecraft" folder, double-click on the "resourcepacks" folder and press Ctrl + V to paste the zip file of the texture pack into the folder. Now activate the texture pack in Minecraft.
Part 2 of 3: On a Mac

Step 1. Install the Unarchiver archiver
It will allow you to unpack the archive in order to copy the textures. For this:
- Open the App Store.
- Click on the search bar in the upper right corner of the window.
- Enter "unarchiver" in the search bar and press ⏎ Return.
- Click Install on the Unarchiver app page.

Step 2. Open the Minecraft launcher
To do this, double click on the Minecraft icon.

Step 3. Click on Launch options
It's in the upper-right side of the launcher window.

Step 4. Click Last release
You will find this option at the top of the launcher window.

Step 5. Open the folder with the Minecraft game
To do this, click on the green arrow on the right side of the "Game directory" field. The.minecraft folder will open, which contains all the Minecraft files.

Step 6. Open the resourcepacks folder
Scroll down to find this folder and then double click on it.

Step 7. Create a new folder
Open the File menu, choose New Folder, enter a folder name, and press ⏎ Return.

Step 8. Open the created folder
To do this, double-click on it.

Step 9. Launch TextEdit
Click "Spotlight"

, type textedit and click "TextEdit" below the search bar. The TextEdit window will open.

Step 10. Enter the resource pack code
In the generated text document, enter the following code - each line of code should be on a separate line:

Step 11. Convert your document to plain text
Open the Format menu at the top of the screen, select Convert to Plain Text from there, and then click OK.

Step 12. Save the document in "mcmeta" format
For this:
- Press ⌘ Command + S to open the Save window.
- Uncheck the boxes next to "Hide extension" and "If extension is not available, use.txt".
- Click on Plain Text Encoding and select Western (Windows Latin 1) from the menu.
- Enter pack.mcmeta in the Save As text box.
- Click "Save".

Step 13. Move the TextEdit document to the created folder
Either drag the "pack.mcmeta" file into the folder, or click on the "pack.mcmeta" file, press ⌘ Command + C, click in the folder window and press ⌘ Command + V.

Step 14. Return to the "Minecraft" folder
Double-click the Back button, which looks like a left-pointing arrow and is at the top left of the Finder window. You will navigate from the created folder to the resourcepacks folder, and from there to the minecraft folder.

Step 15. Open the "versions" folder
Find this folder and double click on it.

Step 16. Double click on the folder with the current version of Minecraft
When in doubt, find the folder with the largest number in the name.

Step 17. Open the JAR file
Click on it to select, click File> Open With> The Unarchiver, wait for the file to open, and then double-click the folder with the Minecraft version number.

Step 18. Find the "assets" folder
Either scroll through the Minecraft folders and files (there are over 4,000 of them), or enter assets in the search bar at the top right of the window.

Step 19. Copy the "assets" folder
Click on it and then press ⌘ Command + C.

Step 20. Return to the textures folder
Press the "Back" button until you return to the "minecraft" folder, then double-click on the "resourcepacks" folder and double-click on the texture pack folder.

Step 21. Paste in the "assets" folder
To do this, press ⌘ Command + V.

Step 22 Find the texture you want to edit
For this:
- Double click on the "assets" folder.
- Double click on the "minecraft" folder.
- Double click on the "textures" folder.
- Double click on the texture category folder.
- Find the texture you want to change.

Step 23. Edit the texture
Select a texture, click File, choose Open With, select the desired graphics editor (such as Photoshop), and change the texture.

Step 24. Save your changes
Press ⌘ Command + S and then close the graphics editor.

Step 25 Modify any other textures
When you're done, activate the texture pack in Minecraft.
Part 3 of 3: How to activate the texture pack in the game

Step 1. Start Minecraft
Open the launcher and click "Play".
If you haven't closed the launcher, go to the News tab and then click Play

Step 2. Click on Settings
It's in the lower-left corner of the screen.

Step 3. Click Resource Packages
You will find this option in the lower left corner of the page.

Step 4. Click on the image of the resource pack
It will move from the left column to the right.

Step 5. Click Finish
It's at the bottom of the page. The texture pack will be activated - now load the game world to test the updated textures.
