This article will show you how to hack a PlayStation 3. You can install mods, cheat codes, third-party applications and games on a jailbroken console that cannot be played on a non-jailbroken console. Remember that jailbreaking is not encouraged by Sony, so a jailbroken console cannot be connected to the Internet (otherwise your account will be permanently blocked).
Steps
Part 1 of 4: How to Prepare for a Hack
Step 1. Download the file for cracking (cracker)
This will take some time, during which you can prepare for the hack. To download a file:
- in a browser, go to
- check the box next to the "Done" option, and then click "Submit";
- click on the link under the word "REX";
- at the top right of the page, click "Skip ads";
- click on the green Download button.
Step 2. Format the USB flash drive to FAT32 file system
To do this, in the "Formatting" window, open the "File system" menu and select "FAT32" in it. This is how you can use your flash drive to update your PS3.
Get a flash drive with at least 1 GB capacity
Step 3. Find out the PS3 firmware version
The method described here can be applied to consoles with firmware 3.55. To find out your firmware version, open the main menu, click Settings> System Preferences> System Information, and look at the number in the Current Firmware line.
- Proceed to the next step if the firmware version is 3.55 or lower.
- If the firmware version is higher than 3.55, a special device for the firmware must be installed inside the console (it needs to be disassembled and then assembled).
Part 2 of 4: How to Create a Hacked USB Flash Drive in Windows
Step 1. Copy the cracker
Find the downloaded file on your computer, click on it and press Ctrl + C. Step 2. Open the Start Menu
To do this, click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen. Step 3. Open an Explorer window
To do this, click on the folder-shaped icon in the lower-left corner of the Start menu. Step 4. Click on This PC.
This monitor-shaped icon is located in the left pane of the File Explorer window. Step 5. Double click on the name of the flash drive.
You will find it under the "Devices and Drives" section in the middle of the screen. A window with the contents of the flash drive will open. Step 6. Go to the Home tab.
It is located in the upper left corner of the window. A toolbar will open at the top of the screen. Step 7. Click Create Folder.
You will find this folder-shaped icon in the New section of the toolbar. Step 8. Name the new folder PS3.
Type PS3 and press ↵ Enter. Step 9. Open the "PS3" folder.
To do this, double-click on it. Step 10. In the "PS3" folder, create an UPDATE folder.
For this:
- Go to the Home tab.
- Click Create Folder.
- Type UPDATE and press ↵ Enter.
Step 11. Open the "UPDATE" folder
To do this, double-click on it. Step 12. Paste the copied file (cracker) into the UPDATE folder.
To do this, press Ctrl + V or go to the "Home" tab and in the "Clipboard" section (on the toolbar) click "Paste". Step 13. Rename the inserted file to PS3UPDAT.
Click on the intruder to highlight it, go to the Home tab, click Rename (under Organize), type PS3UPDAT and press ↵ Enter. Step 14. Unplug your flash drive.
Click the thumb drive icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, and then select Eject Flash Drive from the pop-up menu. When the message opens, disconnect the USB flash drive from the computer and go to this section.
To display the thumb drive icon on some computers, you need to click the ^ icon at the bottom right of the screen
Part 3 of 4: How to Create a Hacked Flash Drive in Mac OS X
Step 1. Copy the downloaded file (cracker)
Click on the file and click Edit (at the top of the screen)> Copy (in the menu).
Alternatively, you can press ⌘ Command + C to copy the file
Step 2. Open a Finder window
To do this, click on the blue face-shaped icon in the dock. Step 3. Click on the name of the flash drive.
You will find it in the left pane of the Finder window. A window with the contents of the flash drive will open. Step 4. Open the File menu.
You will find it at the top left of the screen. A menu will open. Step 5. Click Create Folder.
You will find this option in the menu. Step 6. Name the folder PS3.
Enter PS3 and press ⏎ Return. Step 7. Open the "PS3" folder.
To do this, double-click on it. Step 8. In the "PS3" folder, create an UPDATE folder.
For this:
- open the "File" menu;
- click "Create folder";
- enter UPDATE and press ⏎ Return.
Step 9. Open the "UPDATE" folder. 10 Paste the copied file into the "UPDATE" folder
Click Edit (at the top of the screen)> Paste (in the menu).
You can also press ⌘ Command + V to insert the file
Step 11. Rename the inserted file to PS3UPDAT
Click on the file, open the File menu, choose Rename from the menu, type PS3UPDAT and press ↵ Enter. Step 12. Disconnect the USB flash drive.
In the Finder window, click Eject (the triangle icon to the right of the flash drive name). Disconnect the USB flash drive from your computer and go to this section.
Part 4 of 4: How to Hack PS3
Step 1. Connect your flash drive to your game console
Typically, USB ports are located on the front or back of the set-top box. Step 2. Turn on your PS3.
Press the power button on the console and controller, or press and hold the PS button on the controller. Step 3. Select Settings and press X.
The "Settings" option icon looks like a portfolio and is located at the top of the screen; if you don't see this icon, scroll to the left. Step 4. Select System Update and press X.
The PS3 Update menu will open. Step 5. Select Update via media and press X.
The console will scan the connected flash drives. Step 6. Select OK and press X.
When the console finds a connected drive, a message appears on the screen prompting you to update the firmware. Click "OK" to start the update process. Step 7. Scroll down, select Update and press X.
This will agree to the terms of use and start the installation process of the cracker on the console.
You may need to press X again to start this process
Step 8. Wait until the update is complete
After that, you can assume that the console has been jailbroken.
