There are several reasons why you need to reset your PS3 game console. For example, if a game or video is frozen, a quick reset will be required. If you have changed your TV or cables, you will need to reset the video output settings. If you are having problems with the XMB, use Disk Utilities in Safe Mode.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Reset a frozen console
Step 1. Press and hold the power button on the set-top box to perform a manual reset
Do this on the console itself, as the controller will most likely freeze too.
Step 2. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds
You will hear three short beeps and the set-top box will turn off.
Step 3. Wait a few seconds and then press the power button to turn on the set-top box
Do not turn it on through the controller, as it may not detect the STB itself.
Step 4. The STB will most likely scan the disk for errors
This may take some time.
Method 2 of 3: Reset Video Output Settings
Step 1. Make sure the set-top box is turned off
The power indicator located on the front panel should be red.
If nothing appears on the screen when you replace the TV or HDMI cable, you will need to reset the video output settings
Step 2. Unplug the set-top box and TV from the outlet
Step 3. Make sure the set-top box is connected to the TV via HDMI cable
Step 4. Connect the set-top box and TV to a power outlet
Step 5. Turn on your TV and set it to receive the correct HDMI input
Step 6. Press and hold the power button on the set-top box until you hear two beeps (this will take about five seconds)
Step 7. Use the controller to adjust the picture on your TV
You may need to press the PS button on your controller to turn it on.
Step 8. Click "Settings" - "Display Settings"
Set the correct resolution.
Method 3 of 3: Starting Safe Mode
Step 1. Launching the box in safe mode will allow you to use some diagnostic and repair utilities to help you recover from a failed system
You can use safe mode to restore the file system or reset the STB.
Step 2. Before restoring the file system, back up your game saves (in case something goes wrong)
Save the backup to a USB flash drive - it will take about 5-20 MB.
- Connect the USB flash drive to the set-top box.
- Open the Game menu and select Save Utility.
- Highlight the game you want to back up.
- Press the green △ button and select Copy.
- Open the USB flash drive and copy the file to it. Repeat this process with other games (if you want to back up their saves).
Step 3. Turn off the set-top box
Step 4. Press and hold the power button
You will hear one beep.
Step 5. Continue to hold the button until you hear the second and third beeps
The set-top box turns off and the LED on the front panel turns red.
Step 6. Press and hold the power button again
You will hear two beeps.
Step 7. Continue holding the power button until you hear two short beeps
Release the power button. The message “Connect your controller via USB and press PS button” appears on the screen.
Step 8. Connect the controller and turn it on
In safe mode, wireless controllers do not work.
Step 9. In safe mode, reset the STB
There are several ways to fix problems with your set-top box. Use each of them in order.
- "File system recovery". Repair damaged files on your hard drive.
- "Database recovery". Fixing the database on the hard drive. This will delete messages, notifications, and folders that you created. Files will not be deleted.
- "System Restore". Restore the prefix factory settings. In this case, all information on the hard disk will be deleted. Therefore, before using this option, create a backup copy of the information stored on your hard disk.
