How to add a marker in Google Maps

This article will show you how to save a location and add a marker for it in Google Maps on your mobile device and desktop computer. The service allows you to save different locations to lists. Colored markers that correspond to such lists appear in Google Maps when you sign in to your account. You can also create custom maps using the My Maps service in your browser and a dedicated Android application. Currently the My Maps application not available for iPhone and iPadalthough maps created in a browser can be viewed in the Google Maps app on iPhones and iPads, or any other device.

Steps

Method 1 of 6: How to add a label on a mobile device

Step 1. Open Google Maps

Click on the Google Maps app icon, which looks like a red location marker on a road map. This will open a mode with viewing maps, if you have already logged into your account.

When prompted, select your Google account and sign in

Step 2. Find the location on the map

To find a location on the map, you can flip through the map or tap the search bar at the top of the app and enter the name or address of the place you want. This location will be displayed on the map.

Step 3. Press and hold this place

This will place a large red marker at this location and display a pop-up menu at the bottom of the application.

Step 4. Click Save

It's the third tab at the bottom of the map, next to the icon that looks like a bookmark.

Step 5. Select the list where you want to save the location

The Google Maps app contains three predefined lists: Favorites, Want to Visit, and Starred Places. Click on one of the lists to save the location to it. In each list, places have their own color labels that will appear on the map.

• To create a new list, click + Create list in the upper right corner. Next, enter the name of the list in a special line and click Create.

  Method 2 of 6: How to Add Your Places on a Mobile Device

  

  Step 1. Open Google Maps

  Click on the Google Maps app icon, which looks like a red location marker on a road map. This will open a mode with viewing maps, if you have already logged into your account.

  When prompted, select your Google account and sign in

  

  Step 2. Push ☰

  An icon in the form of three horizontal stripes is located in the upper left corner of the Google Maps application. This will display a new menu on the left.

  

  Step 3. Tap Your Seats

  This is the first item in the new menu on the left. In this case, all your places will be displayed in the program.

  

  Step 4. Click the Saved tab

  It's the second tab at the top of the screen. This will display all your saved lists.

  

  Step 5. Click on the list

  Several preset lists are available in the Saved Places tab: Favorites, Started Places, and Want to Visit. Click the list where you want to add the location.

  To create a new list, click the blue, green, yellow and red plus sign (+) icon in the lower right corner. Next, enter a name for the card

  

  Step 6. Click + Add

  It's the second tab below the list name at the top of the screen.

  

  Step 7. Enter a place name or address

  This will display a list of Google Maps search results.

  

  Step 8. Click the location you want to add

  When you see the place you want in the search results, click on it for details.

  

  Step 9. Click + Add

  This is the second tab on the list. This will add the location to your map. A marker from the list will appear on your map.

  Method 3 of 6: How to Use the Full Site

  

  Step 1. Follow the link in your browser

  This will open the Google Maps page in map view.

  • If you are not already signed in to your Google Maps account, click To come in in the upper right corner of the page, then enter the email address and password for your Google account.

  

  Step 2. Click ☰

  The icon is located in the upper left corner of the Google Maps website. This will display a new menu on the left.

  

  Step 3. Click Your Places

  This item is located approximately in the middle of the menu on the left next to the icon in the form of a marker on the map. This will open the saved locations.

  

  Step 4. Click the Saved tab

  It's the second tab at the top of the menu on the left. This will display all the lists of your saved locations.

  

  Step 5. Click ⋮ to the right of the list title

  Several preset lists are available to you: "Favorites", "Marked places" and "Want to visit". Click the three-dot icon next to the list where you want to add the location marker. This will display a pop-up menu.

  To create a new list, click the blue plus sign (+) icon in the lower right corner of the menu on the left side of the page

  

  Step 6. Click Edit List

  This will display all the locations from the list and several editing options.

  

  Step 7. Click + Add Location

  This item is at the top of the list of locations in the menu on the left. This will display the search bar at the top of the list.

  

  Step 8. Enter the place name or address in the search bar

  This will display a list of Google Maps search results.

  

  Step 9. Click the location you want to add

  Such a place will be added to the lists. This location will appear on the map with a marker that matches the list.

  Method 4 of 6: How to create a map in My Maps for Android

  

  Step 1. Download and install the My Maps application

  The My Maps app is available in the Google Play store. The app icon looks like a red piece of paper with a white marker. The My Maps app is currently not available for iPhones and iPads.

  • Open the Google Play app store.
  • Type My Maps in the search bar.
  • Click the My Maps row in the search results.
  • Click the green Install button.

  

  Step 2. Open the My Maps application

  Tap the app icon on the home screen, in the app menu, or tap Open in the Google Play store.

  

  Step 3. Click the blue icon

  

  A blue icon with a plus sign (+) allows you to create new cards. It's in the bottom right corner of the app.

  If you already have created maps, then you can select a map from the list on the main page

  

  Step 4. Enter the name of the card

  Use the "Title" line to indicate the name of the map.

  

  Step 5. Provide a description for the card (optional)

  If you want to add a short description, then use the "Description" line.

  

  Step 6. Click Ok

  A new map will be created and a blank Google map will be displayed.

  

  Step 7. Click the search bar

  It's at the top of the My Maps app.

  

  Step 8. Enter a place name or address

  This will display a list of Google Maps search results below the search bar.

  • You can also click the blue plus (+) icon in the lower right corner of the map. Then press Add point.

    Drag a marker on the map to the desired location for which you want to add a marker. Next press Choose a place.

  

  Step 9. Click a location in the search results

  When you see the location in the search results for which you want to add a marker, click the row to display the full address with a mini-map below the search result.

  

  Step 10. Click Add to Map

  Blue text will appear below the search result you clicked on. Next, the Change Data menu will be displayed.

  

  Step 11. Review the data and click Ok

  Google Maps will automatically name the place. If you want to change the name, enter a different name in the "Name" line.

  • You can also provide a short description of the location on the "Description" line.
  • If you have multiple layers for your map, you can select the layer you want to add the marker to from the Layer drop-down menu. New layers must be added through the full version of the site.

  

  Step 12. Press

  

  The checkmark icon is located in the upper right corner of the Change Data page. Click the icon after making changes. A marker will appear on your map. Any number of markers can be added.

  To change the map data, tap the marker on the map and then the pencil icon

  

  Step 13. Click the blue icon

  

  A blue icon with a plus sign (+) is located in the lower right corner of the map. It allows you to add a new marker and a new line.

  

  Step 14. Click Add Line

  This item will create a line on the map.

  

  Step 15. Place the "X" icon where the line starts

  Drag the map to position the "X" icon in the center of the map in the desired location.

  

  Step 16. Click the blue icon

  

  When the "X" icon is in the desired location for the start of the line, click the blue icon with the (+) sign to create the starting point of the line.

  

  Step 17. Drag the line and click the blue icon

  

  This will create the center point of the line. You can then drag the map to create an additional line from the center point. Do this every time you need to change the direction of the line, including turns or bends.

  

  Step 18. Click

  

  This checkmark icon is located in the upper right corner of the map. Click the icon when you reach the end point of the line.

  

  Step 19. Enter a name and description for the line (optional)

  Optionally, you can add the name and description of the line in the "Name" and "Description" lines.

  

  Step 20. Press

  

  If you are satisfied with the specified data for the line, click the checkmark in the upper right corner to complete the creation of the line.

  To change the data, click the line on the map, and then click the pencil-shaped icon in the lower right corner. Here you can change the name and description of the line, and click on the pencil icon on the map to change the line. You can add or change center points on the map by clicking and dragging

  Method 5 of 6: How to create a map using the My Maps service on your computer

  

  Step 1. Follow the link in your browser

  Any browser for PC or Mac can be used. This is the page of the "My Cards" service.

  

  Step 2. Click Create New Map

  The red button is in the upper right corner. This will display a large map.

  

  Step 3. Click on the search bar

  It's at the top of the page.

  

  Step 4. Enter a place name or address

  This will display a list of Google Maps search results below the search bar.

  

  Step 5. Click the location for which you want to add a marker

  After that, such a place will open on the map and a temporary green marker will be installed.

  

  Step 6. Click on the green marker

  A pop-up window appears with the address and information for the location.

  

  Step 7. Click + Add to Map

  This will place a marker of this place on the map. Any number of markers can be added.

  • You can also click on the marker icon below the search bar and click on the location on the map for which you want to add a marker.
  • To change the location of the marker, click and drag the marker on the map.
  • Click on the marker and then click on the pencil-shaped icon in the pop-up window to change the details of the selected location.

  

  Step 8. Click the icon in the form of three dots connected by lines

  It's under the search bar at the top of the page. This is the Draw Line icon.

  

  Step 9. Select the desired item

  There are four items to choose from in the menu: "Add a line / shape", "Add a route for a driver", "Add a route for a cyclist" and "Add a route for a pedestrian". Choose the best option for the map you want to create.

  

  Step 10. Click on the starting point of the route

  If the starting point is one of the created markers, then click on the marker. Otherwise, click on any point where the route will start.

  

  Step 11. Click on the end point of the route

  This will create a route line from the start to the end point.

  • If you want to create your own line, select Add line / shape and click on the desired start point of the line. Then click where the line changes direction to add a center point. Next, click at the next change in line direction to create another center point. Follow the action until you reach the end point of the line. Double click on the end center point to complete the line.

  Method 6 of 6: How to View My Maps in Google Maps

  

  Step 1. Open the Google Maps service in an app or website

  You can use the app for Android and iOS devices or the Google Maps website.

  

  Step 2. Click or press ☰

  The three horizontal lines icon is located in the upper right corner of the Google Maps app or website. This will display a menu on the left side of the screen or page.

  

  Step 3. Click or tap Your Seats

  It's an item in the menu on the left. This will display all your saved locations and markers.

  

  Step 4. Click or tap the Maps tab

  It's the last tab at the top of the menu. This will display all the maps that you created in the My Maps service.

  

  Step 5. Click or tap on the map

  Such a map will open in the Google Maps service.
