How to disable Java (with pictures)

Java is a popular programming language and platform for interactive or dynamic websites and web applications. But Java can take up a lot of device memory or slow down the browser. Moreover, Java can cause security issues. To troubleshoot the described problems, simply disable Java.

Be aware that disabling Java can cause problems with websites that use the Java Platform plugin to display content; it can also cause problems with games that use Java, such as Minecraft.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: How to Disable Java System-Wide

Step 1. Close all running browsers

This will avoid conflicts when you disable Java.

Step 2. Open the Java Control Panel

This can be done on Windows and Mac:

Windows - Open Control Panel from the Start Menu. Windows 8.1 users must right-click on the Start Menu. From the View menu in the upper-right corner of the Control Panel, choose Large Icons or Small Icons. Now click on "Java" to open the Java Control Panel.
Mac - Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences. Click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel.

Step 3. Click the Security tab

It's at the top of the window.

Step 4. Uncheck the box next to “Enable Java content in the browser”

Java will be disabled. Click Apply to save your changes.

Step 5. Disable Java in your browser

To do this, use the methods that are described in the following sections of this article. If you are using Internet Explorer, Java will be disabled when you follow the steps in this section.
