In 2019, Apple announced that it was phasing out iTunes. Starting with macOS Catalina, iTunes services will be split between Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV apps. Synchronization with iPhone / iPad will be done via Finder. Some sites allow you to download music for free and then add it to your iTunes / Apple Music library.
Method 1 of 2: How to Find and Download Music for Free
Step 1. Find and open sites with free MP3 files
These sites may not have the most popular hits, but there you can find music from new artists who share it for free.
- SoundClick (in English)
- Internet Arhive (in English)
Step 2. Download free mixtapes
Hip-hop artists (famous and emerging) have come up with a new way to distribute digital music, namely the free distribution of audio files (mixtapes), the duration of which is no less than the duration of an entire album. Since the old (analog) mixtapes have been taken over by the record companies, the new (digital) mixtapes can be downloaded for free to experience new artists and chat with famous artists.
You can find mixtapes directly on the websites of some artists or on the DatPiff site, where you can download many mixtapes for free
Step 3. Look for beginners and promising performers
Typically, these artists post their music on bandcamp or SoundCloud, or on their own sites. Moreover, many famous artists distribute their music on a pay-what-you-want basis.
The “pay what you want” principle does not imply that you have to pay for the song - just enter “0” in the price field to download the song for free
Step 4. Subscribe to music podcasts
Many online radio shows and podcasts broadcast music that you can listen to for free. You can't download this music, but you can subscribe to a podcast to listen to it for free. Below are the free music podcasts available on computers and mobile devices:
- Top Club Chart Europa Plus - listen to dance music. A podcast of topical dance music. The best DJs of Russia represent 25 main club tracks in it.
- Half an hour retro. Retro music - compositions that were listened to by our parents and their parents.
Step 5. Download music from YouTube
There are many music videos on YouTube, and some online services and programs allow you to extract audio tracks in MP3 format from videos and save them on your computer (to do this, you need to open the service website, insert the address of the music video, and then press a couple of buttons).
- These freeware programs include Listen to YouTube, Tube To MP3, YouTube to MP3, and All2MP3. Download one of the programs, install it and paste the address of the video. An MP3 file will be created and added directly to iTunes.
- Recommended method: Find artists' YouTube pages and look in their profiles for links to sites where artists post their works. What's more, look for artist pages on Bandcamp or social media.
Step 6. Ask your friends for audio files
If you and your friends like the same music, ask them to burn it to CDs and then upload the audio files to iTunes. It's better if you use free cloud storage, for example, Dropbox (you can add files and folders to it, and then share them with friends). Make sure you and your friends have cloud storage accounts. Friends will add music to the shared folder of the cloud storage, and you will download the audio files from this folder to your computer and add them to iTunes.
Step 7. Download audio files from the torrent tracker
This requires a special program called a torrent client, such as uTorrent or Frostwire. Search for songs on a large torrent tracker like Rutracker.org, download a small torrent file, and then open it in a torrent client to download the songs to your computer. Now upload the downloaded audio files to iTunes.
Method 2 of 2: How to Upload Songs to iTunes
Step 1. Open the folder with the downloaded audio files
Do this in an Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window. By default, downloaded files are located in the Downloads folder. Also, audio files can be stored in the "Music" folder.
Unpack the archive if needed. Large files, such as mixtapes, are distributed as archives (ZIP files) that must be unpacked. Newer operating systems have utilities that automatically unpack archives; if you have an old system, install a third-party archiving program, for example, WinZip
Step 2. Highlight the audio files you are going to upload to iTunes
To do this, click on each required file.
- Hold down the left mouse button and move the pointer over all the files you need to select multiple files at once.
- To select multiple files one at a time, hold Ctrl (⌘ Command in masOS) and click on each file you want.
Step 3. Right-click on the selected files and select Copy from the menu. or Cut.
The files will be added to the clipboard.
If you have a Magic Mouse or trackpad, click with two fingers
Step 4. Launch iTunes
Click the multicolored musical note icon found in the Start menu (Windows) or in the Applications folder (Mac).
On macOS Catalina, launch Apple Music, not iTunes
Step 5. Click on Library
This is the first tab at the top of the window.
Step 6. Click Change
You will find this option in the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window.
Step 7. Click on Insert
The copied audio files are added to your iTunes library.
You can also drag audio files from Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) to iTunes or Apple Music
Step 8. Connect iPhone / iPad to computer
To do this, use the USB cable that came with your iPhone / iPad.
Step 9. Click on the iPhone or iPad-shaped icon in the iTunes window
It's to the right of the drop-down menu at the top of the iTunes window.
Step 10. Click on Music in the left pane
The music library will open.
Step 11. Check the box next to "Sync Music"
This means you want to download music to iPhone / iPad.
Step 12. Click Synchronize
Your iTunes music collection on your computer will sync with your iPhone / iPad.
