This article will show you how to change VPN (Virtual Private Network) settings on a Windows or Mac OS X computer and on an iPhone or Android device. To set up a VPN, you first need to connect to a VPN. Most VPN services offer paid services.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: On Windows

Step 1. Open the Start Menu

Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen. Step 2. Open "Options"

Click the gear-shaped icon at the bottom left of the Start menu. Step 3. Click "Network and Internet"

It's in the middle of the Options window. Step 4. Click on VPN.

This tab is on the left side of the Network & Internet window. Step 5. Select VPN.

Click on the name of the VPN server you want to configure. Step 6. Click Advanced Options.

This option is under the selected VPN. The VPN page will open.

To add a new VPN server, click + Add VPN Connection

Step 7. Click Change

It's in the middle of the page. VPN settings will open. Step 8. Enter your VPN details.

Change the information in any of the following options:

  • Connection name: change the name of the VPN on the computer;
  • Server name / address: change the address of the VPN server;
  • VPN type: select the type of connection;
  • Login type: specify the type of VPN login (for example, "Password");
  • Username (optional): change the username used to log in to the VPN;
  • Password (optional): Enter the password used to log into the VPN.

Step 9. Click Save

This button is at the bottom of the page. The changes will be saved and will take effect.

Method 2 of 4: On Mac OS X

Step 1. Open the Apple menu

Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen. A menu will open. Step 2. Click System Preferences.

It's near the top of the menu. Step 3. Click on Network.

This purple globe-shaped icon is in the middle of the System Preferences page. Step 4. Select VPN.

Click on the VPN name in the leftmost column. The VPN settings will be displayed on the right side of the window.

To add a new VPN server, click the "+" in the lower left corner of the network connections window and select "VPN" from the "Interface" menu, and then enter the details of the VPN server

Step 5. Configure VPN

Change the information in any of the following options:

  • Configuration: click on the drop-down menu at the top of the window, and then select the type of configuration (for example, "Default");
  • Server address: change the address of the VPN server;
  • account name: Change the account name used to log into the VPN.

Step 6. Click on Authentication Settings

It's under the "Account Name" text box. Step 7. Set the authentication parameters.

Change the information in any of the following options:

  • User Authentication: check the box to the left of the required authentication type (for example, "Password"), and then enter the data;
  • Computer Authentication: Select a computer authentication option.

Step 8. Click on OK

It's at the bottom of the Authentication Settings window. Step 9. Click Apply.

The changes will be saved and will take effect.

Method 3 of 4: On iPhone

Step 1. Launch the Settings app

Tap the gray gear-shaped icon on the home screen. Step 2. Scroll down and tap "General"

It's near the top of the settings page. Step 3. Scroll down and tap VPN.

It's near the bottom of the General page. Step 4. Find a VPN connection.

Find the name of the VPN connection you want. Step 5. Push ⓘ.

This icon is located to the right of the VPN connection name. Step 6. Tap Change.

It's in the upper right corner of the screen. Step 7. Configure VPN.

Change the information in any of the following options:

  • Server: change the address of the VPN server;
  • Remote ID: change the remote VPN ID;
  • User Authentication: tap this option and select "Username" or "Certificate";
  • Username or Certificate: Enter username or certificate for VPN authentication.
  • Password: Enter your VPN password (if needed).

Step 8. Click Finish

This button is in the upper right corner of the screen. The changes will be saved and will take effect.

Method 4 of 4: On an Android device

Step 1. Launch the Settings app

A gear-shaped icon (or a series of sliders) is located in the Application Bar. Step 2. Scroll down and tap More.

It's under the Wireless & networks section. Step 3. Click VPN.

You will find this option under Wireless & networks. Step 4. Select VPN.

Click on the VPN server you want to configure. Step 5. Configure VPN.

Change the information in any of the following options:

  • Name: change the VPN name;
  • Connection type: tap this option and then select a new connection type (for example, "PPTP");
  • Server address: change the address of the VPN server;
  • Username: change the username;
  • Password: change your password.

Step 6. Click Save

This button is in the lower right corner of the screen. The changes will be saved and will take effect.
