The Internet is a vast network of interconnected servers that can host inappropriate content for certain people, especially children. The following instructions are for blocking malicious and unwanted sites in all versions of Internet Explorer. If you are using Firefox or a similar browser, you may want to consider an alternative way to block websites with a host file: use the hosts file on Windows. Here is the easiest and most effective method for browsing the Internet safely through IE.
Step 1. Open Internet Explorer
Step 2. On the menu bar, select Tools, Internet Options, Contents
Step 3. In the Content Advisor field, select Enable
Step 4. Go to the Allowed Sites tab
Step 5. Enter the website address
Keep in mind - if you want to block the entire site, enter an asterisk (*) in front of it. For example, to block MySpace completely, enter *.
Step 6. Click Never and then OK
Step 7. Go to the General tab
Make sure users can see sites that are not rated.
Step 8. Enter an easy-to-remember password
Step 9. Click OK to browse the internet safely
- Consider installing web filtering software, such as Control software, that allows or denies sites based on their content.
