There are many sites on the Internet that allow you to share your photos. Shutterfly is one of the more popular and successful such sites. Not only does it provide a place to upload and share photos, but it also allows you to order professional prints and many different products with your images on them, such as mugs or photo books. These instructions will help you familiarize yourself with the site, teach you how to create an account, upload and share photos, and use other features that the site provides.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Create an account
Step 1. Go to the Shutterfly website
Step 2. Read the terms of use and privacy policy
While you can easily skip this step, there are a few things you should know before using the site. For example, the site does not allow the use of certain types of images and does not collect information about you that can be disclosed to a third party if you do not want to.
Step 3. Create an account
If you have not registered yet, then the account creation window will open automatically when you enter the site. Creating your account is pretty simple: just enter your name and email address in the fields provided and come up with a password.
If the window for creating an account does not open automatically, simply click on the “Sign up” button in the upper right corner
Part 2 of 4: Uploading Photos
Step 1. Transfer your photos to your computer
If you don't know how to do this, then read the instructions for your camera, phone, or tablet.
Step 2. Open your Shutterfly page
Click on the "My Shutterfly" button at the top of the screen. This will take you to your personal Shutterfly page.
Once you are logged into your account, you can access most of Shutterfly's features through the My Shutterfly page
Step 3. Get ready to upload images
After you open your Shutterfly page, you will need to click on the “Add pictures” button. After that, you will be taken to another window where you can select files to upload, as well as create an album where you can place these images.
Step 4. Select images
Click on the "Choose files" button. This will allow you to select the images on your computer that you want to upload to the site. In order to load several images at once, you need to hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard and click on the images that you want to load. Then click on the "Open" button.

- To convert your images to JPEG format, you can use even the most basic graphic editors. For example, in Microsoft Paint, you just need to open the image that you want to redo, and then click on the "Save" button and select the JPEG format. This will create a new copy of the image in the required format.
Step 5. Create an album and upload your images
After you select the images, enter the name of the album where you want to place the image data in the lower left corner of the screen. Then click on the "Start" button.
- For example, if the photos are from a trip to the Grand Canyon, you might name the album "Grand Canyon 2015".
- If you have already created an album and want to upload photos to it, click “upload to an existing album” and select the appropriate album from the drop-down menu.
Step 6. Review your images
Once the photos are uploaded, you can view them by clicking on the "View pictures" button. You can also view them at any time by clicking on the “My Pictures” option at the top of the home page.
You can also view your photos individually by clicking on them one at a time, or launch the slideshow option to view them sequentially
Part 3 of 4: Sharing Photos
Step 1. Decide how you want to share your photos with others
There are two ways on the site that you can share your photos: by email or by launching a public page where people can view your photos.
Emailing photos is much easier and better suited for users who are not that familiar with computers. The next few steps will explain how to share photos this way
Step 2. Start the exchange process
Go back to your My Shutterfly page and scroll down to the third section, My shared pictures and projects. Click on the "Share pictures" button. On the next screen, click on the “Get started” button on the right side of the screen.
The Get started button is for those who have never shared images before. The next time you want to send photos via email, you can skip this step
Step 3. Select the images you want to send
A new window will open where you can select the images or albums you want to share. Once you have made your selection, click on the Next button.
- To select images individually, view them and click on the ones you want to send.
- While viewing an album, you can share all of the images in it by clicking the “Share this album” link in the upper right corner of the screen.
- You can send up to 250 images at a time.
Step 4. Submit images
You will see a new window in which you will need to enter the email addresses of the people with whom you want to share images, as well as the subject of the letter and the accompanying message. When you're done and you're ready to submit the images, click on the Share now button.
After you share your images, you can save the email addresses for future reference. If you often send photos to the same group of people, you can create groups inside Shutterfly's address book by clicking on the 'Add group' button
Step 5. Share your photos on a shared site
The Shared Site is a secure personal site where users you log in can view your images. You can make your shared site available to everyone, or you can restrict access to specific people only. Click on the “Share” tab at the top of the page. To get started, in the “Share Sites” field, click on the “Create a site” button. Building a shared website is more difficult than emailing photos, but Shutterfly will walk you through it step by step.

Part 4 of 4: Creating Photo Products
Step 1. Decide what you want to make
In addition to exchanging images, you can also order prints of your photos to make a greeting card, invitation, photo book, mugs and many other items.
Step 2. Print order
Ordering a print is very easy. To get started, open the “My Pictures” tab, select the desired photo, and then click on the “Print” option at the top of the page. Here you can choose the size and quantity you want, as well as the delivery method. Choose either drop shipping or pick up at any Target store.
Step 3. Ordering cards or photo books
Cards and photo books can be ordered using the appropriate option at the top of the My Pictures page. Step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process of creating these products.
Photobooks are professionally printed albums. When you create such a photo book on Shutterfly, you can choose from a variety of sizes and styles. The site will guide you through the process of creating a product, but if you have any difficulties, the site also provides written instructions, which can be found here
Step 4. Ordering photo gifts
At Shutterfly, you can turn your photos into mugs, candles, patterns, calendars, photo blankets and more. You can do this by clicking on the “More products” button in the upper right corner of the My Pictures page, or by clicking on the “Store” tab to view a range of options.
The process of creating such products is quite difficult, but the site will walk you through the steps of turning your photos into various gifts and souvenirs
Advice
- Shutterfly has several apps that let you directly share your photos from your phone or tablet, letting you skip the step of transferring your photos to your computer. With these applications, you can also access a number of site functions from your phone. Click on the Mobile button at the top of the Shutterfly home page to learn more about these options.
- Now at Shutterfly you can also create talking photo books for iPad.
- If you are a professional photographer and want to use Shutterfly to sell your work, you can register for a dedicated Pro Gallery account for this purpose, although it is not free.
Warnings
- If you want to create a shared site, make sure your privacy settings prevent unwanted visitors from viewing your photos.
- As with creating a shared website for a sports team or staging your child, make sure you have the appropriate security settings and that you are not posting personally identifiable information about children that could fall into the wrong hands.
