In this article, we will show you how to turn on the keyboard backlight on your HP Pavilion laptop. To do this, press one of the F-keys, for example "F5". If the keyboard backlight does not come on, perform a hard reset.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: How to turn on the backlight

Step 1. Connect your computer to an electrical outlet
In some cases, the keyboard backlight will not turn on if the battery is discharged to a certain level. In this case, just plug the laptop into a power outlet.

Step 2. Find the "Backlight" key
This key is one of the F keys (usually "F5") found at the top of the keyboard. Look for a three-dot icon on the key.

Step 3. Press the "Backlight" key several times
If the F-keys are responsible for configuring laptop components, the keyboard backlight will turn on. Each time you press the F-key, the backlight brightness will change.
If the backlight does not turn on when you pressed the Backlight key, continue to the next step

Step 4. Hold down the Fn key and then press the Backlight key
The Fn key is on the lower left side of the keyboard. The keyboard backlight turns on, and each time you press the F-key, the backlight brightness changes.
Do not release the Fn key and press the Backlight key several times to select the desired backlight brightness level

Step 5. Make sure your HP Pavilion laptop has keyboard backlighting at all
Please be aware that not all HP Pavilion notebooks have a backlit keyboard. If you are not sure if your laptop has a backlit keyboard, read the instructions (online or on paper) for the laptop.
Method 2 of 2: How to troubleshoot backlit issues

Step 1. Make sure your HP Pavilion laptop has a removable battery
To troubleshoot a backlit keyboard, you must "hard" reboot the laptop, and to do this, you must remove the battery.
Technically, you can also remove the non-removable battery, but this will require removing the keyboard and a few other components, which is not recommended to do it yourself

Step 2. Disconnect all cables and USB devices from the laptop
For example, a power cable, USB stick, speaker cable, and so on.

Step 3. Turn off your computer
For this:
- Open the start menu
-
Windowsstart - Click "Shutdown"
-
Windowspower - Click on "Turn off" in the pop-up window.

Step 4. Remove the removable battery
For this:
- Turn the laptop upside down.
- Press and hold the battery compartment cover latches.
- Remove the battery compartment cover.
- Remove the battery from the laptop and place it on a soft, dry surface (such as a towel).

Step 5. Hold down the power button for 20 seconds
This will completely discharge the residual energy in the laptop.

Step 6. Insert the battery and close the compartment
The laptop can now be turned on.
If the battery has been discharged, plug the laptop into an electrical outlet before turning it on

Step 7. Turn on the laptop
To do this, press the power button on your laptop. The device will turn on as usual.

Step 8. Try to turn on the keyboard backlight
After a hard reset, one of the F-keys can be used to change the brightness of the keyboard backlight.
