Many laptops overheat because the fan at the bottom is blocked, and the hard drive then quickly fails. By using one (or all) of these methods, you can keep your laptop cool and work efficiently.
Steps

Step 1. Lift the laptop
When seated at your desk, place a small book or object (such as your iPod dock) under your computer's battery. This slight tilt allows much more airflow to flow under the laptop, keeping it much cooler. Make sure the book is not blocking the fan opening at the bottom.
- If the book doesn't help, you can try something a little more bumpy. Try attaching the four egg tray grooves to the four corners of your laptop. Either you can attach them with tape / duct tape, or use an adhesive fastener for a flexible design.

Step 2. Buy a laptop cooling mat
There are many brands to choose from (Thermaltake, Xion, Targus) that are available in computer stores (like Best Buy) or online from Newegg. You can even buy risers, or computer stands that are ventilated.

Step 3. Maintain a cool environment
Try to keep your laptop in a cool, air-conditioned place to keep your system cool and not overheat. Step 4. Consider using a heatsink.
Use a steel flat strip as an external heat sink. This works because your computer has to heat up more mass before it overheats. This also means that the larger the strip, the longer it will take to overheat. This will work if your laptop has a metal case and it gets hot.
Advice
- Do not use your laptop on soft surfaces such as a sofa, carpet or pillow! Any openings located on the bottom of the laptop will be blocked and airflow will be reduced, causing it to overheat. Use a laptop stand, tray table, or even a wooden chopping board to create a solid, level surface for proper airflow.
- Use a can of compressed air for the fan once a month so that it is free of dust or unwanted particles for the fan to function properly. Using a vacuum cleaner can lead to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and damage components to your laptop.
- Be sure to thoroughly clean your laptop once in a while to avoid dust particles getting into places where they are not needed.
- If you've been using your laptop for a while, consider replacing the battery.
- Just add a spare wire for your grill rack from your toaster or even your conventional oven. The balance is impeccable and the air circulation is also perfect.
- SMCfancontrol - Allows you to adjust different fan speeds based on what the Mac is doing and temperatures around 40 degrees, use it to cool down your laptop.
Warnings
- Never block your laptop fan.
- Do not block the ventilation under the laptop with tape.
- Do not place your laptop on your lap if it overheats.
