Over time, dust will collect inside the computer. The fans suck it in, but dust still collects around the vents and on the motherboard. If you do not clean your computer from time to time, dust can lead to overheating of the computer and subsequent malfunctions. It can even short-circuit and destroy your motherboard!
Steps
Step 1. Turn off and unplug your computer
Step 2. Use compressed air to remove dust
Buy a can of compressed air. You can buy it online or at a department store. You can also use an air compressor. But make sure the pressure does not exceed 3.4 atmospheres, so as not to damage the motherboard
Step 3. Also, using a soft brush, remove dust that accumulates in places such as fans, power supplies, air intakes and between RAM modules
Step 4. Open the computer case
The case can be closed using screws or other mechanical locking system.
If you cannot figure out how to open the case, see your computer manual or search Google for your computer model number for more information
Step 5. Blow out all parts of the motherboard, including the fan and heatsink
Step 6. Close the computer case
Step 7. Plug in your computer and turn it on
Advice
- Some fans will spin if you are trying to apply compressed air. Use a cotton swab or other object to remove dust.
- Compressed air is also great for cleaning the keyboard.
Warnings
- Make sure that the compressor pressure does not exceed 3.4 atmospheres. If dust will not be removed at this pressure, then use soft brushes.
- Be sure to eliminate static electricity. You can do this by touching the metal chassis of your computer, or by using electrostatic discharge.
- Do not try to open the power supply to clean it.
