How to turn your computer display upside down

You may need to turn your computer display upside down to view drawings from a different angle or adjust an awkwardly mounted monitor. Maybe you just want to play a prank on your colleague. Either way, it's very easy to rotate your computer screen!

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Windows

Step 1. Keyboard shortcuts

Some Intel integrated graphics support keyboard rotation for screen rotation. If that didn't work, read on.

Ctrl + Alt + ↓ - turn the screen upside down.
Ctrl + Alt + → - rotate the screen 90 ° to the right.
Ctrl + Alt + ← - rotate the screen 90 ° to the left.
Ctrl + Alt + ↑ - Return the default screen orientation (landscape).

Step 2. If the keyboard shortcuts didn't work, right-click on the desktop and select Screen Resolution or Display Settings

Then click Display (Windows XP only).

From the Orientation menu, choose a screen position. If you do not accept your changes, the screen orientation will revert to the default position

Step 3. Determine your graphics card model

The screen rotation process depends on the video card model, and it is possible that the video card drivers do not allow you to rotate the screen in Windows. Having found out the model of the video card, it will be easier for you to deal with the rotation of the screen.

Press ⊞ Win + R and enter dxdiag. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool will open.
Click on the "Display" tab. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, proceed to the next step. If you have an AMD / ATI graphics card, go to step 5.

Step 4. Rotate the screen if you have an NVIDIA graphics card

In this case, use the NVIDIA Control Panel. If you have an AMD / ATI graphics card, proceed to the next step.

Right click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel from the menu.
In the Display category (left) find the Screen Rotation menu.
Select the screen you want to rotate.
Select the display orientation or use the buttons to rotate the screen 90 °.

Step 5. Rotate the screen if you have an NVIDIA graphics card

In this case, use the Catalyst Control Center utility.

Right click on the desktop and select Catalyst Control Center.
Under Common Display Tasks, select Rotate Desktop. If you don't see this option, update your drivers (see next step).
Select the display you want to rotate from the drop-down menu.
Select display orientation.

Step 6. Updating drivers

The most common reason for inability to rotate the screen is outdated drivers. Update your drivers to be able to rotate the screen and also speed up your computer.

Open the NVIDIA or AMD website (depending on your graphics card). If you do not know the manufacturer of your video card, use the DirectX diagnostic utility (see step 3).
Run the utility to automatically detect the video card model. Or use the DirectX diagnostic utility.
Download and install the latest drivers. The installer will automatically remove the old drivers and install the latest version.
Now try rotating the display again. To do this, use one of the methods described above.

Method 2 of 3: Mac OS X

Step 1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences

If you are using Mavericks (10.9) or earlier, you can rotate any connected display. If you are running Yosemite, you will only be able to rotate supported displays.

Step 2. Open the "Displays" option

It depends on your OS X version:

Mavericks (10.9) and earlier. Hold ⌘ Command + ⌥ Option and select Displays.
Yosemite (10.10) and newer versions. Click Displays. Holding down ⌘ Command + ⌥ Option and choosing Displays can damage your system.

Step 3. In the menu, click "Rotate" and select the desired orientation

If you do not see such a menu in Yosemite, your display does not support rotation. This is usually the case with built-in displays in MacBooks and iMacs.

Step 4. Click on the "Layout" tab (Yosemite)

If you have multiple displays and are going to rotate one of them (in Yosemite), rotate all connected displays. To fix this, go to the "Arrange" tab and uncheck the "Mirror Image" box.

Method 3 of 3: Chrome OS

Step 1. Keyboard shortcut

Press Ctrl + ⇧ Shift + rotate. This will rotate the screen 90 degrees. Repeat this step to rotate it another 90 degrees. The screen is now turned upside down.
