In this article, we will show you how to create a file, such as a document, on your computer. In Windows, this can be done in the Explorer window, and in any system, through the File or New menu of the program in which you want to create the file.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Windows

Step 1. Open an Explorer window

Click on the yellow-blue folder icon; the icon is on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
Alternatively, press ⊞ Win + E to open the Explorer window

Step 2. Navigate to the folder where you want to create the file
In the left pane of Explorer, click on the desired folder.

Step 3. Go to the Home tab
You will find it at the top left of File Explorer. A toolbar appears at the top of the window.
Alternatively, you can right-click an empty space in the window to open the context menu

Step 4. Click New Item
It's in the Create section of the toolbar. A dropdown menu will open.
If you have opened the context menu, select "New" in it - a pop-up menu will appear

Step 5. Select the type of file you are going to create

If the desired file type is not in the menu, create a file through the program menu

Step 6. Enter a name for the file
Since the file name is highlighted, enter the name you want.

Step 7. Press ↵ Enter
The file will be renamed.
Double-click the file to open it
Method 2 of 3: Mac
Step 1. Remember that in macOS you can create files only through the program menu
That is, for example, if you need to create a Word document, you will have to start the Word program. However, you have the option to create folders.
If you want to create a file or document, go to this section

Step 2. Open Finder

Click on the blue and white face icon; the icon is in the dock.

Step 3. Navigate to the folder where you want to create the folder
Do this in a Finder window.
For example, to create a folder in the Downloads folder, click Downloads in the left pane of the Finder window

Step 4. Open the File menu
You will find it on the left side of the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Step 5. Click New Folder
You will find this option in the menu. A new folder will be created in the current folder.

Step 6. Enter a name
Since the name of the created folder is highlighted, enter the name you want.

Step 7. Press ⏎ Return
The folder will be renamed.
Method 3 of 3: Via the program menu

Step 1. Run the program in which you will create the file
To do this, double-click on the program icon. You can also do one of the following to find the program:

Step 2. Click File

In some Windows programs, such as Paint 3D, you will see a New or New Project option. In this case, skip this step

Step 3. Select the Create option
You will find it in the "File" menu or on the main page of the program.
In some programs, such as Adobe CC, you will need to enter detailed information about the project or select a template

Step 4. Create a file
Do this if you want to make changes to the file, for example, add text.

Step 5. Open the "Save As" menu
To do this, press Ctrl + S (Windows) or ⌘ Command + S (Mac).
- You can also click File> Save As.
- If pressing Ctrl + S or ⌘ Command + S did not work, the file may have already been created when you clicked New. This is typical for some programs, for example, for Adobe CC.

Step 6. Enter a name for the file
Do this on the File Name (Windows) or Name (Mac) line in the Save As window.

Step 7. Select a folder to save the file
To do this, click on the desired folder on the left pane of the window.
