Microsoft is always working to improve the quality of Windows operating systems, fix bugs and malfunctions in the system and built-in programs. In order for these changes to take effect on your computer, you need to periodically update your system through the Automatic Updates service.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use the built-in Windows update wizard

Step 1. Go to the Start menu, select the Programs option, then find the Windows Update program
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to open Control Panel, select the Security section and then find the Windows Update service.

Step 2. Select the "Check for updates" option
The program will start searching for new available updates. If a message appears stating that new updates are available, or if the program offers to install already downloaded updates, click on the confirmation button, for example, "OK" or "Install updates".

Step 3. Wait while all updates are installed
Restart your computer to complete the installation process.
Method 2 of 3: Download updates from the Microsoft website
Step 1. Open Internet Explorer and go to
Click the Express Critical Updates button to see only the critical updates that need to be installed. Click the Change Custom Settings button if you want to see a list of all available updates. Step 2. Wait while the installer collects the necessary information about your computer.
It will determine which operating system you are using, as well as the current version of installed Microsoft programs. Step 3. After the program finishes scanning your computer, review the list of suggested updates to install.
Select the updates you want to install on your computer. Step 4. Click the Open button and then the Run button.
When finished, click the Next button and follow the instructions. Step 5. After installing the updates, restart your computer.
Method 3 of 3: Setting up automatic updates

Step 1. Open the Start menu and then Control Panel
If you are using Windows XP, select Automatic Updates. If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, go to Security and then select Turn on automatic updates.

Step 2. Select the "Automatic" option if you have Windows XP
If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, open the drop-down menu and select Install updates automatically.

Step 3. Click the "OK" button and close the window
All updates will now be installed automatically.
