How to update iOS on iPad (with pictures)

This article will show you how to update iOS on iPad using Software Update (iPad) or iTunes (computer).

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Using the Software Update function

Step 1. Back up your iPad

As a rule, updating iOS does not delete data, but sometimes it crashes.

Step 2. Connect iPad to a power source

Use the cable that came with your iPad to connect your device to a power outlet or computer.

Step 3. Connect your device to your wireless network

To download large updates, connect your iPad to a wireless network.

Step 4. Open the Settings app

on iPad.

Step 5. Scroll down and tap "General"

Step 6. Click Software Update

It's near the top of the page.

Step 7. Click Download and Install

If this option is not displayed, the software does not need to be updated

Step 8. Enter your iPad passcode

Step 9. Read the user agreement with Apple

Step 10. Click I Agree

A progress bar of download and installation will appear on the screen.

Method 2 of 2: Using iTunes

Step 1. Update iTunes

To update your iPad, you need to use the latest version of iTunes.

Step 2. Back up your iPad

Step 3. Connect iPad to computer

Use the cable that came with the iPad; Connect the USB plug to your computer and the Lightning plug or 30-pin plug to the iPad charging port.

If iTunes doesn't launch automatically, open it manually

Step 4. Click on the iPad icon

It's in the upper-left side of the window, below the toolbar.

Step 5. Click on Summary in the left pane

Step 6. Scroll down and click Check for Updates

If updates are available, iTunes will ask if you want to download and install them.

Step 7. Click Download and Update

iTunes will download and install updates automatically.

• Do not disconnect iPad from your computer during the download and installation process.
• Do not disconnect your computer from the Internet during the entire process.
