In this article, we'll show you how to reduce, enlarge, or crop an image in Paint. When the image is reduced or enlarged, its aspect ratio will remain the same, and if the image is cropped, its fragment will disappear.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: How to reduce or enlarge a picture

Step 1. Create a copy of the desired image
Find the picture, right-click on it and select "Copy" from the menu. Now right-click on an empty space on the folder or desktop and select "Paste" from the menu.
If you do not make a copy, the original image will be edited

Step 2. Right-click on the copy of the image
A menu will open.

Step 3. Select Open with
You will find this option in the middle of the menu. A new menu will open.

Step 4. Click on Paint
You will find this option in the new menu. The picture will open in Paint.

Step 5. Click Resize
You will find this option in the Image section at the top of the window.

Step 6. Check the "Percentage" checkbox
In this case, the resizing will be presented as a percentage.
- The dimensions (vertical and horizontal) of the original image are 100%. If this number is reduced to 75%, the picture will be reduced by 25%.
- If the dimensions of the picture are in pixels, check the "Pixels" option.

Step 7. Check the box next to the "Maintain aspect ratio" option
Otherwise, the original aspect ratio (aspect ratio) will not be preserved (for example, if you change the vertical size, the horizontal size will remain the same).
If the box is already checked, go to the next step

Step 8. Resize the image
In the "Horizontal" line, enter a number between 1 and 500. Any number less than 100 will reduce the size of the image, and more than 100 will increase the size (in both cases, the proportions will not change).
If the size is in pixels, enter the number of pixels (vertical) in the Vertical line. If you want, uncheck the Maintain Aspect Ratio box and enter the number of pixels (horizontal) in the Horizontal row

Step 9. Click OK
The size of the picture will change.

Step 10. Save the image
To do this, press Ctrl + S.
Method 2 of 2: How to crop a picture

Step 1. Remember what it means to crop a picture
This process will lead to the fact that only the desired fragment will remain from the original image, and the quality of the picture will not suffer. Cropping is suitable if you want to remove excess parts of the photo, while maintaining the original resolution.
Cropping a picture will reduce its file size

Step 2. Create a copy of the desired image
Find the image, right-click on it and select "Copy" from the menu. Now right-click on an empty space on the folder or desktop and select "Paste" from the menu.
If you do not make a copy, the original image will be edited

Step 3. Right-click on the copy of the image
A menu will open.

Step 4. Select Open with
You will find this option in the middle of the menu. A new menu will open.

Step 5. Click on Paint
You will find this option in the new menu. The picture will open in Paint.

Step 6. Click the ▼ icon under Select
You will find this option in the Image section of the Home tab at the top of the window.

Step 7. Click on Rectangular Region
It's at the top of the menu.
To draw a freeform region, select the Freeform Region option

Step 8. Hold down the left button and drag the crosshair across the image
A dotted frame will appear on the picture - the fragment that is located inside the frame will be saved when the image is cropped.
- If you want to remove the borders of the photo, click on it in the upper left corner, and then drag the crosshair diagonally to the lower right corner.
- If you want to select another fragment of the picture, remove the dotted frame - to do this, click on the picture outside the frame.

Step 9. Click on Trim
You'll find this option to the right of the Select option at the top of the Image section. The portion that is outside the dotted box disappears.

Step 10. Save the image
To do this, press Ctrl + S.
Advice
- If you want to print a resized image, make sure the printer does not (automatically) resize the image.
- If you reduce the size of the picture, even slightly, the size of its file will decrease.
Warnings
- If you enlarge the picture, its quality will decrease.
- Resize the copy, not the original. To create a copy of the original file, right-click on the image and select "Copy" from the menu; then right-click on the desktop and select "Paste" from the menu; then right-click on the copy of the picture and open it in Paint.
