Footnotes allow you to cite sources of information or explain a concept in detail without deviating from the main text. In Word, you can easily manage footnotes as they are numbered automatically and the footnote size changes dynamically based on the number of words. Give your document a professional look by using footnotes to clarify information or cite your sources.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Word 2007/2010/2013 (Windows)

Step 1. Click the Links tab located between the Page Layout and Mailings tabs
On this tab, you can insert a table of contents, footnotes, links, titles, and other elements into your document.

Step 2. Place the cursor where you want to insert the footnote
By default, the footnote will be inserted as a superscript number.

Step 3. Click Insert Footnote (in the Footnotes section of the References tab)
The footnote is inserted (superscript) and a dividing line appears at the bottom of the page. The cursor will automatically move under this line so you can enter the footnote text.
- Endnote text is not at the bottom of the page (like a footnote), but at the end of the entire document. By default, endnotes are numbered with Roman numerals (I, II, III, and so on).
- Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Alt + F to create a footnote, or Ctrl + Alt + D to create an endnote.

Step 4. By default, footnotes are numbered in ascending order (with new footnotes added)
You can change this setting so that the numbering starts at 1 on every new page (or every new section).
- Click the Menu button in the lower-right corner of the Footnotes section. In the window that opens, in the "Format" section, open the "Numbering" menu and select the desired option in it.
- You can insert section breaks by going to the Page Layout tab, clicking on Breaks in the Page Setup section and choosing the type of break you want to insert. In addition to changing the way footnotes are numbered, section breaks are great for changing the layout of a specific part of a document.

Step 5. If you want to mark footnotes not with numbers, but with symbols, you want footnotes to be displayed under the text, and not at the bottom of the page, you want to start numbering from a certain number, then click the "Menu" button in the lower right corner of the "Footnotes" section …
In the window that opens, set the required parameters.

The footnote will be inserted next to the cursor, and you will be moved to the text section of the footnote, where you can enter its text. The footnote text will be located at the bottom of the page on which the footnote is located (below the separator line).
Alternatively, you can press Cmd + Opt + F to create a footnote, or press Cmd + Opt + E to create an endnote
