Learn how to save a document to Google Docs in this article. Although documents are automatically saved to Google Drive, you can save a copy of a public document to Google Drive or download the document to your computer.

Step 1. Open Google Docs

Go to https://docs.google.com/document/ in your computer's web browser. If you are already signed in to your Google account, a list of your documents in Google Docs will open.

Step 2. Open or create a document

Double click on an existing document to open it, or click New Document at the top left of the page to create a new document.

Step 3. Enter text or other information

If the document needs to be filled with content, do so now.

To change the name of the file, click the name text box in the upper left corner of the page and enter a different name

Step 4. Wait for confirmation that the changes have been saved

When you're done making changes to the document, look at the top of the page for the phrase "All changes saved to Drive." She will appear in a couple of seconds.

It's in the upper-left corner of the page. A menu will open.

Step 4. Click Create Copy

Step 5. Enter a new file name

Do this in the text box at the top of the popup. The file will be saved under this name on your Disk.

Step 6. Click OK

This button is at the bottom of the window. The file will be saved to your Google Drive account with read / write permission.

Step 1. Open Google Docs

Step 2. Open your document

Double click on the document you want to download to open it.

It's in the upper-left corner of the page. A menu will open.

Step 4. Select Download as

It's near the top of the menu. A pop-up menu will appear.

Step 5. Select the file format

In most cases, you can choose Microsoft Word (docx) or PDF Document.

If you're on a Mac that doesn't have Microsoft Word, open the Word document in Preview

Step 6. Wait for the file to download

After a few seconds, the document will be downloaded to your computer in the selected format.
