Steps
Method 1 of 3: In Microsoft Word (on Windows and macOS)

Step 1. Open your document in Microsoft Word
Double click on the desired file on your computer.

Step 2. Place the cursor where you want to enter the square root sign

Step 3. Click on the Insert tab
It's in the top bar in Word.

Step 4. Click Symbol

Step 5. Click More Symbols…

Step 6. Click the drop-down menu in the "Set" section

Step 7. Select Numeric Symbols
A list of symbols appears.

Step 8. Select the square root sign √
This will insert the square root symbol.
Method 2 of 3: Using keyboard shortcuts

Step 1. Open the document where you want to insert the square root sign
You can use this method in any Windows program that allows you to type on the keyboard, including web browsers.

Step 2. Place the cursor where you want to insert the square root sign

Step 3. Hold Alt, click 2, 5, and then 1.
The buttons must be pressed on the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. Release alt = "Image" after pressing 1 - a square root sign should appear.
- If you are using a laptop and it does not have a numeric keypad, follow these steps:
- Press Fn + F11. This action includes locking the register of the numeric keys. These are numbers (usually blue) located in the upper right corner of the U, I, P, J, K, L, and O keys.
- Press and hold Alt.
- Press K, I, then J. The numbers on these letter keys are 2, 5, and 1. The square root symbol appears.
- Press Fn + F11 to disable the latched numeric keys.
Method 3 of 3: Using keyboard shortcuts on Mac

Step 1. Open the document in which you want to insert the square root sign
