In this article, we are going to show you how to open and read an EPUB (e-book) file on a computer or mobile device, including a Kindle. If you think this is an overwhelming process, simply convert the EPUB file to a PDF document that can be quickly opened on almost any device. Remember, DRM protected e-books generally cannot be converted or transferred to other devices.
Steps
Method 1 of 6: On Windows

Step 1. Use Microsoft Edge
If you have a computer running Windows 8 or Windows 10, Microsoft Edge on those operating systems is the preinstalled browser in which you can open EPUB files. To do this, simply double-click on the EPUB file and then scroll through it as needed.
Microsoft Edge's user interface is pretty straightforward. If you want to use a dedicated EPUB reader, skip this step and read on

Step 2. Open the Caliber website
Go to caliber-ebook.com in a computer web browser. Caliber is a program where you can open an EPUB file.
One of the advantages of Caliber over Microsoft Edge is that it allows you to create and use a library of EPUB files

Step 3. Click Download
This tab is at the top right of the page. You will be taken to the Get caliber page.

Step 4. Click on Windows
It's on the left side of the page.

Step 5. Click Download caliber
This link is at the top of the page. The Caliber installation EXE file will download to your computer.
You may need to choose a download folder first or allow downloads

Step 6. Install Caliber
Double click on the downloaded EXE file and then follow these steps:
- Check the box next to "Accept".
- Click Install.
- Click Yes when prompted.

Step 7. Launch Caliber
When prompted, make sure the box next to the "Launch Caliber" option is checked, and then click "Finish" at the bottom of the window.
- To launch Caliber in the future, open the Start menu

Windowsstart , type caliber in the search bar and click on "Caliber" in the search results.

Step 8. Review the Caliber settings
Click Next at the bottom of the first two pages, and then click Finish at the bottom of the third page. Caliber installation completes and Caliber's user interface opens.
Skip this step if the Caliber user interface is already open

Step 9. Click Add Books
This green button is in the upper-left side of the window. The Explorer window will open.

Step 10. Add EPUB file to Caliber
Click on the desired EPUB file, and then click Open in the lower-right corner of the window.
To select multiple EPUB files, hold Ctrl and then click on each desired EPUB file

Step 11. Open the EPUB file
Double click on the title of the book in the main window. The text and illustrations of the book will appear in a new window; scroll the contents of the book up or down as needed.
Method 2 of 6: On macOS

Step 1. Select the EPUB file
Open the folder with the EPUB file and then click on it to select.

Step 2. Click File
It's in the upper left corner of the screen. A menu will open.

Step 3. Click Open With
It's near the top of the File menu. A pop-up menu will appear.

Step 4. Click iBooks
It's in the pop-up menu. IBooks launches and the selected EPUB file is added to its library.
Alternatively, you can launch iBooks first and then drag the EPUB file into the program's window

Step 5. Open the EPUB file
To do this, double-click on the title of the book in the main iBooks window. The book will open in a new window; scroll the contents of the book up or down as needed.
You may need to navigate to the All Books tab at the top left of the window first
Method 3 of 6: On iPhone

Step 1. Make sure the EPUB file is on iPhone
To open an EPUB file on iPhone, the file must be in the Files app on your smartphone. To add an EPUB file to the Files app, select the EPUB file anywhere (for example, in an email), click the Share icon

, tap Save to Files, then select a folder.
For some repositories, such as Google Drive, the adding process will be slightly different. For example, if the EPUB file is in Google Drive, click the file, choose Open In from the menu, and then click Save to Files

Step 2. Open the folder with the EPUB file
Launch the Files app

, click Browse, select the option you want (for example, On My iPhone), and then tap the folder where you added the EPUB file.

Step 3. Click on the EPUB file
It will be added to the free iBooks app that comes with your iPhone or iPad.
If you've removed iBooks from your iPhone or iPad, download this app from the App Store

Step 4. Tap the My Books tab
It is located in the lower left corner of the screen. A list of books will open, where you will find the book of the added EPUB file.

Step 5. Open the EPUB file
To do this, click on the title of the corresponding book. To scroll through the contents of the book, swipe left or right.
Once the EPUB file is in your iBooks library, you can open it at any time by launching the iBooks app, clicking My Books, and tapping the title of the book
Method 4 of 6: On Android

Step 1. Install Google Play Books
It is a free e-book reader application where you can open an EPUB file.
- Open Play Store
-
Androidgoogleplay - Click on the search bar.
- Enter Google Play Books.
- Click Google Play Books.
- Tap Install.
- Click "Accept" when prompted.

Step 2. Launch Google Play Books
Tap the blue triangle icon.

Step 3. Tap ☰
This symbol is in the upper left corner of the screen. A menu will open.

Step 4. Click on Settings
It's in the middle of the menu. The settings page will open.

Step 5. Check the box next to "Enable PDF download"
This will enable support for PDF and EPUB files.

Step 6. Upload the EPUB file to your Android device
If the EPUB file is on your computer, download it to your Android device. To do this, simply send the file to your email address:
- Open your mailbox on your computer.
- Create a new email - In the "To" line, enter your email address.
- Click on the "Attachments" icon

- Select the EPUB file.
- Send an email.

Step 7. Launch the mail application on your Android device
In most cases, launch the Gmail app.

Step 8. Open the email with the EPUB file
The attached file is at the bottom of the email - if you can't see it, scroll down to the bottom of the email.

Step 9. Click on the attached EPUB file
It will be imported to Google Play Books.

Step 10. Start reading the e-book
When the EPUB file is added to Google Play Books, you will be navigated to the "EBOOKS" folder in your library. Click on the title of the book to start reading it.
To open the list of downloaded EPUB files when you launch Google Play Books again, click on the Library tab at the bottom of the screen, and then click on EBOOKS at the top of the screen
Method 5 of 6: How to copy an EPUB file to your Kindle

Step 1. Convert the EPUB file to MOBI format
Do this to open a workbook on your Kindle Fire or Kindle Paperwhite. You can convert an EPUB file to the specified format using an online service - open the site https://www.epubconverter.com/epub-to-mobi-converter/, and then follow these steps:
- Click Add File.
- Select the EPUB file.
- Click Open.
- Click on “Start Upload”.
- Click on the link for the MOBI file in the Download Link column.

Step 2. Copy the MOBI file
Click to select it, and then press Ctrl + C (Windows) or ⌘ Command + C (Mac) to copy the file.

Step 3. Connect your Kindle to your computer
Insert one end of the charging cable into the charging port on your Kindle and the other into a USB port on your computer.
If you have a Mac, use a USB 3.0 to USB / C adapter to connect the charging cable to your Mac

Step 4. Open your Kindle
For this:
- Windows - open the start menu
-
Windowsstart , click "File Explorer"
Windowsstartexplorer , click This PC and double-click the Kindle name.
- Mac - open Finder
-
Macfinder2 , and then click on the Kindle name on the left side of the window.

Step 5. Open the "Documents" folder
To do this, double-click on the "Documents" folder in the Kindle content window.
- You may need to unlock your Kindle first and / or double-click the "Internal Storage" or "Internal Storage" folder.
- In the Kindle Fire, open the Books folder.

Step 6. Insert the MOBI file
To do this, press Ctrl + V (Windows) or ⌘ Command + V (Mac).

Step 7. Wait while the MOBI file is copied to your Kindle
When the light on the Kindle cable stops blinking, continue to the next step.

Step 8. Remove your Kindle
This will help keep your files safe when you disconnect your Kindle from your computer:
- Windows - click on the icon

- Mac - Click the triangle icon to the right of the Kindle name in the Finder window.
Method 6 of 6: How to convert an EPUB file to PDF

Step 1. Save the EPUB file in a location that's easy to find
An EPUB file can be converted to a PDF that opens on most devices without the need to install additional applications.
If you have multiple EPUB files, copy them into one folder to simplify the conversion process

Step 2. Open the website of the online converter
Go to https://www.epubconverter.com/ on your computer's web browser.

Step 3. Click EPUB to PDF Converter
It's in the left pane under the EPUB Converter section.

Step 4. Scroll down and click Add File
This button is in the middle of the page. A window will open where you can select the EPUB file.

Step 5. Select the EPUB file
Navigate to the folder with the EPUB file and then click on it.

Step 6. Click Open
This option is located in the lower right corner of the window. The EPUB file will be uploaded to the online converter site.

Step 7. Click on Start Upload
You will find this button to the right of the EPUB file name. The process of uploading the EPUB file to the online converter site will begin; when you see the file name turn into a blue link with a “.pdf” extension at the end, proceed to the next step.
It will take a few minutes to download the file

Step 8. Download the PDF file
To do this, click on the blue link with the PDF file name in the Download Link column. The PDF file will be downloaded to your computer - double-click the file to open it in the PDF reader installed on your computer.
