In this article, you will learn how to unpack a GZ archive (an archive is a file that contains one or more other files). This can be done using a variety of programs and applications on Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android.
Method 1 of 4: On Windows
Step 1. Install the 7-Zip software
Skip this step if it is already installed on your computer. To download and install 7-Zip:
- go to the page
- Click “Download” to the left of the “.exe” option at the top of the page;
- double click on the downloaded installation file;
- click "Yes" when prompted;
- click "Install";
- click "Close" when the installation is complete.
Step 2. Open the Start Menu
Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner of the screen. The Start menu will open.
Step 3. Open an Explorer window
Click the folder-shaped icon at the bottom left of the Start menu.
Step 4. Find the GZ archive
Click on the archive folder in the left pane of the Explorer window.
You may have to open a series of subfolders to find the GZ archive
Step 5. Select the GZ archive
To do this, click on it.
Step 6. Go to the Home tab
This tab is in the upper-left corner of the File Explorer window. A toolbar will open under this tab.
Step 7. Click Copy Path
It's in the Clipboard section of the Home toolbar.
Step 8. Open the 7-Zip program
Click on its icon, which looks like black and white symbols "7z".
Step 9. Click on the address bar of the 7-Zip program window
It's at the top of the window, below the menu bar. The content of the address bar will be highlighted.
Step 10. Enter the path to the GZ archive
Press Ctrl + V to display the path to the archive in the address bar, and then press ↵ Enter. The archive will open and you can view its contents.
Step 11. Click on the folder icon
It's on the left in the address bar. The entire contents of the archive will be highlighted.
Step 12. Click Checkout
It's the “-” icon in the upper-left side of the 7-Zip window. A pop-up window will open.
Step 13. Select the folder where the files will be extracted from the archive
Click ⋯ (on the right side of the Extract To row), select a folder (for example, Desktop), and click OK.
Step 14. Click OK
This button is located at the bottom of the window - it will close, and the contents of the archive will be extracted to the specified folder.
Once the process is complete, double click on the folder to view the extracted files
Method 2 of 4: On Mac OS X
Step 1. Install The Unarchiver program
Skip this step if it is already installed on your computer. To download and install The Unarchiver:
- on your computer, open the App Store;
- click on the search bar in the upper right corner of the window;
- in the search bar enter unarchiver and press ⏎ Return;
- click "Install";
- enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
Step 2. Launch The Unarchiver
, enter unarchiver and click "The Unarchiver" in the search results.
Step 3. Go to the Formats tab
It's at the top of the window.
Step 4. Check the boxes next to the "Gzip" and "Gzip Tar" options
You will find them at the top of the window. The Unarchiver will now be able to unpack the GZ archive.
Step 5. Open Finder
To do this, in the dock, click on the blue face icon.
Step 6. Find the GZ archive
Click the archive folder in the left pane of the Finder window. You may need to open a number of subfolders to find the GZ archive.
Step 7. Unpack the GZ archive
To do this, double click on the GZ file; in some cases, you need to specify the folder where the files will be extracted, and then click “Extract” in the lower right corner of the window. The files from the archive will be extracted to a folder that you can work with as usual.
- If a message appears stating that The Unarchiver cannot extract files to the specified folder, open the Apple menu (top left corner of your screen), click System Preferences> Security & Privacy, click the Privacy tab, click by “Accessibility”, click on the lock-shaped icon in the lower left corner, enter the password, click “+”, in the Applications folder, select “The Unarchiver”, click “Open” and click the lock-shaped icon again.
- You can also open the GZ archive by clicking on it and then clicking File> Open With> The Unarchiver.
Method 3 of 4: On iPhone
Step 1. Download the iZip app
Skip this step if you already have it installed on your iPhone. To download iZip:
- open the app "App Store"
- click "Search";
- tap the search bar;
- enter izip, and then click "Find";
- click "Download";
- enter your Apple ID or Touch ID.
Step 2. Open the GZ file
Click on the icon of the application that contains the GZ file.
Most email apps can't open a GZ file, so do it on a cloud storage app like Google Drive
Step 3. Click "Share"
The location of this icon depends on the application that stores the GZ file, but usually the icon is located in one of the corners of the screen. If you click this icon, a pop-up menu will open at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4. Scroll right and tap iZip
This folder-shaped icon is found in the Share pop-up menu in the top row of apps. The iZip application will open.
Step 5. Press "X" in the window with the notification about the Pro version of the application
It's in the upper-right corner of the pop-up window. If the window prompting you to update the application to the Pro version does not open, skip this step.
Step 6. Tap OK when prompted
You will find this button in a pop-up window with the text "Would you like to extract all files?" (Do you want to extract all files?). Click OK to extract the files from the GZ archive and be able to open and view them.
Method 4 of 4: On an Android device
Step 1. Download the GZ archive to your Android device
Open the application that contains the GZ file, select it and download it to the device memory.
Skip this step if the GZ archive is already in the device memory
Step 2. Download the AndroZip app
If this application is already installed on your device, click on its icon to launch it. To download AndroZip:
- open the Play Store
- tap the search bar;
- enter androzip;
- click "AndroZip File Manager";
- tap "Install";
- click "Accept";
- tap "Open".
Step 3. Click Continue
This option is in the middle of the popup that will open when you launch the AndroZip app.
Step 4. Tap Downloads
It's on the left side of the screen. A list of recently downloaded files will open, including the GZ archive.
You may have to press "☰" to see this option
Step 5. Tap the GZ Archive
It will be highlighted and a pop-up window will open.
Step 6. Click Checkout Here
It's near the top of the pop-up window. The contents of the GZ archive will be extracted to the Downloads folder. You can now open and view any of the extracted files.
