The cistern must be cleaned periodically to prevent the accumulation of bacteria and an unpleasant odor. Typically, it is sufficient to use a commercially available cleaning agent and lightly rub the interior surfaces to clean. A very dirty canister may require bleach. Clean regularly to keep the toilet clean and the room smells fresh.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: How to Apply the Cleaner

Step 1. Drain the water
You must first turn off the water supply to the tank. Usually the valve is located behind the toilet next to the wall. Then rinse off the water so that the waste tank is empty.

Step 2. Choose a suitable cleaning agent
Assess the degree of contamination. If the tank is relatively clean, then a simple disinfectant will suffice. Use the same product you would normally use to clean bathroom surfaces. If the surfaces of the tank are very dirty, then a more effective remedy is needed.
- If hardened mineral deposits are visible on the walls, use white vinegar.
- If there is a lot of dirt and mold in the cistern, it is best to use bleach.

Step 3. Apply the cleaning agent
Bleach and cleaning agent must be poured or sprayed inside the tank. Treat the bottom and sides, paying particular attention to the dirtiest areas. Remember to wear gloves when using bleach.

Step 4. Treat mineral deposits with vinegar
If mineral deposits are present, the cleaning process will be slightly different. Pour white vinegar into the bowl up to the top of the overflow tube and let sit for 12 hours. After 12 hours, rinse the vinegar out of the cistern and do your usual cleaning.
Part 2 of 3: How to clean the tank

Step 1. Put on gloves
Toilets and bathrooms are usually full of bacteria, so wear rubber gloves before cleaning the cistern. They will protect your hands from bacteria and germs.
Gloves are also essential to protect the skin when using bleach

Step 2. Apply and leave the cleaner
Do not rinse off the product for the specified amount of time. Typically 10-15 minutes is sufficient, but it is best to always check the instructions on the label of your cleaning product.
Do not forget that the vinegar must be left for 12 hours and only then proceed to cleaning

Step 3. Brush the surfaces
Use a stiff brush, old toothbrush, or sponge to clean the tank. Treat the bottom and sides to remove visible dirt and odor.

Step 4. Flush the tank
After cleaning with detergent, turn on the water again and rinse the drain tank. If you've used bleach, draw up five liters of clean, cold water and then rinse.
Safety goggles may be used to avoid splashing water and bleach into your eyes
Part 3 of 3: How to keep it clean

Step 1. Remove mineral deposits periodically
Over time, deposits appear in any cistern. Inspect the cistern every week and treat with white vinegar if necessary. Fill it with vinegar, let it sit for 12 hours, then rinse it off and do your normal cleaning.

Step 2. Use the cleaning tablets carefully
Stores often sell special tablets that are designed to freshen the smell in the cistern. Do not use bleach tablets as they can destroy the inside of the tank.
No tablets are required if the reservoir is cleaned regularly

Step 3. Follow the cleaning procedure
Many people clean the toilet regularly, but forget about the cistern. Don't repeat these mistakes. Clean the cistern thoroughly at least once a month to keep the room smelling fresh.
