Are you a knitting fan and want to find other knitters in your area? Do you like a particular subgenre of music and want to be able to easily “keep in control” of new artists and concerts? Groups on Facebook allow you to easily connect with people who share the same interests as you. Groups can be public or secret, and some are by invitation only. See Step 1 for instructions on how to find and join groups that interest you.

Step 1. Find the group you want to join

Groups allow people with similar interests to talk about those interests in one place. You can find groups in different ways, although regardless, the joining process is the same.

  • Group Search - If you know the name or part of the group name, you can search for it in the Facebook search bar. Select a group from the search results to open the group page.
  • Look at the groups of your friends. Their friends' profiles will display the groups of which they are members. You can click on the links to visit the group pages for any of these groups.
  • Review the suggested groups. Facebook recommends a list of groups based on your other interests and what your friends are following. You can see this list by clicking on the "Find New Groups" link in the left menu on the home page.

Step 2. Look at the type of group

There are two main groups that can be found uninvited: "Open" groups and "Closed" "groups. Open groups do not require approval to join, and they can be joined immediately. Private groups require approval from one of the group admins, and you will need to wait for you to be accepted before you can view the group.

There are also "Secret" bands. These groups do not appear in search or people profiles. You must receive an invitation from the group in order to join it

Step 3. Join the group

Open the page of the group you want to join. You will see a "Join Group" button under the group cover. Click it to request admission to the group.

  • If the group is Open, clicking the "Join Group" button will immediately enroll you in the group.
  • If the group is Closed, clicking the Join Group button will send a request for admission to the admins. You will need to wait to be accepted before you can interact with the group.
  • Other people can see that you have joined the group in their News Feed.

Step 4. Place posts in the group

While you can see group posts before you are accepted, you cannot post or comment on other posts until your membership is approved. After that, you can post and comment in the same way as on other Facebook pages.

  • Just like a regular Facebook wall post, you can add images, videos, links, and more to your group posts.
  • Make sure your posts contribute to the group. If your posts are impolite or off-topic, you are likely to be removed from the group.

Step 5. Follow the group's updates

When you join a group, new posts will appear on the News Feed, meaning you don't always need to visit the group's page to stay up to date. You can comment on posts that appear in your news feed.
